What It Takes To Be A Sustainable Furniture Brand

Compared to years past, expectations for living spaces and daily objects are much higher. The consumer behaviour of buying new things and discarding the old keeps increasing.

From the very beginning, PUPUPULA placed sustainable design at the core of our vision and mission. This concept is part of our brand DNA and a strict principle in our manufacturing. The founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad, once noted in his manifesto, The Testament of a Furniture Dealer, 'No method is more effective than a good example.' We believe we have a responsibility to help families live sustainably, using our products to show why protecting the planet matters.

We view sustainable design through three main pillars:

  1. Material Selection
  2. Design Thinking
  3. Product Packaging

#1: Material Selection

We have worked with many different materials over the years, including different types of paper, wood, and fabric. Each material selection offers unique sustainable solutions. When we use plastic, we choose biodegradable raw materials that return to nature quickly, or materials recycled from PET plastic bottles.

These choices are not easy. They usually mean fewer options and higher costs. However, buying responsibly sourced raw materials or items that are easier to recycle is a necessary step toward conscious consumption.

Beyond these foundational steps, our material selection continues to support the environment through clean, high-performance choices:

  • Solid Beech Wood: We source entirely FSC-certified German beech to guarantee responsible forest management and long-term structural durability.
  • Eco-friendly Water-based Paint: Our non-toxic, water-based paint protects the furniture without releasing harmful chemicals, creating a safer indoor environment.
  • F☆☆☆☆ Particle Board: We use the highest F4-star grade to ensure strict environmental compliance and zero-waste structural strength.
  • Solid Wood Multilayer Board: By maximizing wood utility and reducing raw material waste, this high-efficiency board lowers our overall environmental footprint.

#2: Design Thinking

Most children's items on the market are built for a specific, narrow age group. This means that as children grow, these objects are discarded due to shifts in size, aesthetics, or user needs. Before we begin designing, PUPUPULA spends time analyzing how a product will actually be used in a home. We look for the right entry point to extend the lifespan of every piece.

We use practical modular design to give products space to grow. For example, our Tree Clothes Stand and Rack can be adjusted to be taller. Children use it when they are small, and it grows right along with them. We also prioritize neutral, timeless styling so the furniture blends naturally into the home environment for years. Functionally, our pieces serve the whole family - like our Any-way Table that combines the functions of a living room coffee table with a children's play table.

Good design solves the waste created by fast furniture. This is the direction we work toward every day.

#3: Product Packaging

PUPUPULA packaging uses environmentally friendly materials. We use paper trays to protect products from transit damage whenever possible. When extra protection is necessary, we use minimal plastic filling materials like airbags. If a product gets damaged due to weak packaging, that creates even greater waste and defeats the purpose of environmental protection.

For large furniture, we use recycled kraft paperboard combined with honeycomb cardboard. The honeycomb structure is naturally strong, which removes the need for excessive packaging layers.

Guided by conscience and creativity, PUPUPULA will continue to produce high quality goods that lighten the burden on our planet.
