Understanding the Finishes on Our Furniture

No matter how safe or high quality a core material is, children interact directly with the surface. They are prone to drawing on tables, spilling liquids, and messing things up. We cannot and should not try to change a child’s natural behaviour, so we design surfaces around it.

Choosing the right finish for kids' furniture protects the core from moisture and wear while keeping your child's environment safe. It seals in chemicals from the core board, prevents splinters, and creates hygienic, easy-to-clean surfaces. Here is how we choose the finishes across our products based on function.

Eco-Friendly Water-Based Paint

For Pure Air Quality and Protection

Solid wood is a natural material that breathes. If left uncoated, raw solid wood acts like a sponge, absorbing ambient moisture and spills, which causes the wood to swell, crack, and stain over time. Coating timber is essential to seal the wood, but the type of coating matters just as much as the timber core itself.

While some traditional finishes can be altered to meet safety standards, water-based paint replaces chemical thinners with water as its primary solvent. This removes harsh chemical odours and minimizes volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, making it environmentally friendly and the safest choice for kids furniture.

We use water-based paint on our solid German beech wood pieces including bed frames. As children come in close contact to these surfaces, prioritizing pure and fume-free indoor air is essential.

Formica® Laminates & Melamines

For Heavy Use and Easy Cleaning

Engineered boards provide internal stability. However, it is the protective surface layer with sealed edge-banding that makes the piece durable and easy to maintain over time.

We mainly use two types of surface layers depending on how heavily the surface is used:

• Melamine Paper: Applied to non-tabletop surfaces, such as bed and storage cabinet frames. It creates a smooth and practical barrier for daily use.

• Formica® Laminates: Applied to surfaces like play tables and study desks that are prone to wear. Formica® laminates add superior scratch resistance, water protection, and antimicrobial properties (Protec+). Kids can draw, paint, and create freely, while parents can wipe markers and spills away easily.

Natural Wood Veneers

For the Touch and Aesthetic of Real Wood

Natural wood veneer is made by slicing thin layers of real timber, such as white oak, and bonding them onto engineered boards.

Solid wood panels can warp or crack when crafted into wide flat surfaces or curves. Applying real wood veneer over a stable core gives the authentic grain, visual warmth, and tactile feel of solid wood, while ensuring the panel stays flat and structurally safe over time.

We use natural oak wood on side panels, and our curved multilayer board pieces.
